An Analog Life: The only Jazzfish in the pond!

Bump 'n Grind's Analog Market has become a welcomed community for vinyl-lovers and friends returning to the DMV. A place to chat music, bring your family, and play your records to a receptive crowd. Adam Straus, aka DJ ADM, or more recently known as, Jazzfish, has connected with us since returning to Silver Spring, MD during the pandemic. The enthusiastic selector is another valuable cog to our growing community. His artistic and musical journey has taken him from coast-to-coast, entrenched him in the world of Burning Man, and paved the way for his career in event production and management. Whether it is UK Jazz, upbeat Electro, or obscure West Coast freestyle jams, Adam does his homework when he finds a sound he loves. His attention to detail and appreciation for weaving a comprehensive sonic tapestry during his sets are clear at first listen. The man can juggle a fast-paced dance mix, or sit back for a long-format retrospective of an artist/sound.
We are excited to keep collaborating with Jazzfish, and happy to have him hold down our Analog Sessions every third Saturday of the month!
In this edition of the "An Analog Life" blog series, Jazzfish shares his current interests and vinyl fascinations! Enjoy this mix from Adam while you read:
What’s the foundation of your record collection? Why?

My records are both a collection of musical memories (of times in my life) and colors on a canvas. I have always collected music I loved (regardless of genre), which led to an eclectic collection. I enjoy having a wide range of music to pull from. Since DJing mostly went digital, I’m currently collecting UK Jazz and 80’s freestyle/ disco-rap on vinyl.

What do you look for when you buy records?

Music that connects and weird stripped down edits/remixes. While labels and artists matter, so does album art and editing credits.

What do you like about sharing music at Analog Market?

I love getting to play an extended set and really dig deep into my collection. And good coffee!

Where are you from, how’d you end up in the DMV?

I grew up in the DC area. But my journey took me from Richmond for college, and then the SF Bay Area for 17 years. Then found my way back.

Who are some of your current favorite artists and record labels?

  • 2 Top Labels

  • Top 5 Releases ATM

    • Ezra Collective - Where I’m meant to be

    • Tamil Rogeon - 24 hours in Lapa

    • Andrew Ashong & Kaidi Tatham - Sankofa Season Remixes

    • The Beat by DJ Spun (West Coast Breakbeat Rave Electrofunk 1988 - 1994) Vol 1

What are some of your other passions?

Cycling, adventuring with my kids & wife, and good coffee.

What does community mean to you?

I love having people to talk to about music who are also passionate about finding music that connects. Music sounds better with you.

Where else are you playing your records?

DC - WOWD 94.3 FM, Eaton Radio & RVA - Jungle Room, The Hof

Anything else you’d like to share with our community?

Stay tuned, the best is yet to come!
